Dr. Asa Green came to Livingston in 1973, and although a native of Maine, he stayed on to serve The University of West Alabama for just over twenty years. The length of his tenure is second only to Julia Tutwiler, and in that time period he was the instrument of progress and improvement at UWA on several fronts. Dr. Green received his AB degree from Bates College in 1951, where he was graduated Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude. He received his MA degree from the University of Alabama in 1955 and his LL. D. degree from Jacksonville State University in 1975. Before going into education, Dr. Green had a variety of career experiences that served to strengthen the leader he was to become. He served in the U. S. Army from 1952 until 1954 and held a number of administrative positions in the private sector. He was research director for the Alabama League of Municipalities from 1955-1957; city manager for Mountain Brook, Alabama for 1957 – 1965; executive secretary for the Alabama Association of Insurance Agents from 1965 to 1966; Director of Development for Birmingham Southern College from 1966 to 1977, and Director of Development and Communications for Dickinson College. These experiences helped Dr. Green to pinpoint areas of growth potential in UWA’s academic offerings, and gave him the expertise to see those expansions through. The Ira D. Pruitt School of Nursing was established during Dr. Green’s tenure, and continues today to turn out some of the most sought after graduates in the state. In addition, the University established the Allied Health Linkage with the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and a dual degree program was established with Auburn University. The University’s physical plant was also expanded and improved during Dr. Green’s administration. The Wallace Student Union building, Reed Hall, Homer Field House, Hoover Apartments, and the Hunt Technology Complex were all constructed under Dr. Green’s leadership. Brock, Webb, and Bibb Graves Halls were all renovated during this time period, and the McConnell Memorial Chimes were installed in Webb Hall. In the area of student life, Dr. Green was actively supportive of UWA athletic programs. He served as President and a member of the Executive Committee of the Gulf South Conference. He served as Vice –President for Division II of the NCAA following several years of service as a member of the NCAA Council and the Division II Steering Committee. He is also a former member of the NCAA’s Planning and Review Committee, and of the NCAA President’s Commission, where he served as the Division II Chairman. In addition, Dr. Green was also named to the Association’s Special Committee to Review Financial Considerations in Intercollegiate Athletics. Over and above his official duties to the athletic program, during his twenty plus years of service Dr. Green rarely missed a football game, home or away. Considering the geographic spread of the Gulf South Conference, traveling to games was no easy feat. Students were no doubt impressed to find that Dr. Green and his wife Betty were also the loudest and most vocal fans at all home basketball games. Upon his retirement from Livingston University, Dr. Green chose to remain in Livingston where he is active in the Sumter County Fine Arts Council, the Friends of the Ruby Pickens Tartt Public Library, and several other community organizations. He continues to be active in the NCAA. Dr. Green and "Miss Betty" still attend UWA basketball games on a regular basis and are still among the staunchest supporters of UWA athletic programs. |
